Artist statement
There are many reasons we as artist’s choose the material we do for our work. It may be for the love of that material, the availability of supplies, the type of workspace we may have or maybe it’s what we find comfortable and familiar. I have chosen my art material out of necessity. I am not a healthy person. My immune system does little if any work. What treatments they do have available have side effects such as severe fatigue and flue like symptoms.
This is why I have recently chosen pencil for my medium. It is something that I can have close, I don’t have to go looking for the materials on those days where I just can’t hardly move, and drawing seems to take little energy. I make art for a selfish reason. It’s not to change the world or even a person’s mind, it’s because I have to. I feel better when I am working. It helps my mental and keeps me feeling positive. Whether I feel good or not I can achieve with the process of making. It feels me with thought and wonder. I am constantly learning and when I am learning I feel as if I have a purpose.
My work I am creating is all those worldly creatures that I come across in my daily life. Things that make me think and what I am surprised to see. When residing in Florida I found a shocking amount of elders living and working and because of the encounter I began to practice drawing portraits of elders.
Now I am faced with new surroundings and with that comes new encounters. We recently became residence of Mesa Arizona and there are things here that I have either not see or things that I have not been able to see while living in Florida. It is amazing the impact that our surroundings will have on our art. Some of my current art it has a twist, a little on the fun side. I hope it’s fun anyway.
