| writing an artist statement What is its purpose. Part One: I’m not sure why but I have difficulty writing artist statements. You may think, statements, I thought you wrote one and then you’re done?? But this is not the case. as an artist, you constantly have to update and rewrite. There is so much written about how to write this ever so important document. Unfortunately, not all of it says the same thing on how to approach how it should be written. I will start writing my statement, thinking I know what I’m doing and then all the sudden I am so lost I have no clue what it’s supposed to say and for what exact reason I would write it for. I recently read an article from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago which made a great point on what to remember over all when writing your statement. It said that an artist statement helps the audience understand your work. You might find that this is a given. Maybe it is and I’m just easily distracted but once I started reading about key points and what to consider adding to my writing, I become a bit lost again. The takeaway? The artist’s statement is to help the audience understand your work. |
